First weeks - First steps

The first weeks of English lessons is to determine and establish the assessment, attitudes and motivation of children. They are ready to use a language, if from the beginning the children are stimulated to be active. Similarly, for teachers, early steps in the process of teaching is a critical period for orientation and training in situations of "where they talk the language into the learners."This includes all the rituals and routines which the children are familiar with  from other subjects.

In addition, teacher can also mention all the words possible, like numbers, colors, animals, organs and other words which are found in stories, rhymes and songs, if the situation allows and is comfortable.

In this initial steps, the relation between the themes in "thematic webbing" with classified exercises is also important. Teachers can have the cildren to practice words like "fruit, apples, oranges, grapefruit". Fruits appear also in the context of its own theme and other topics. If you have previously discussed colors, they can be repeated again when talking about the fruits.
The purpose of the "first steps" is not just collect words, but to activate prior knowledge of children and to practice pronunciation or conduct basic "tongues training" which are fundamental through the communicative situation and in a playing atmospher.

There are various possibilities to use vocabulary in compliance with  the situation and the game. In addition, children are also expected to understand and be able to follow simple basic commands in English. If within the first weeks, there are approximately 400-600 words being acquired, then this is a good capital for the child to be able to speak by creating simple sentences using simple syntax:

The initial reaction of children to the pronunciation practice is to pronounce words together. After a while, teachers can use "lip reading", the teacher is only moving his lips to give examples of speech. If the teacher whispers a statement, then the child understand that they must say exactly what they were hearing. If the first letters of words have been written on the board or on cards, the children say the word designated by those initials.

Minggu-minggu pertama dari pelajaran bahasa Inggris sangatlah menentukan serta membentuk penilaian, sikap dan motivasi anak. Mereka siap untuk menggunakan suatu bahasa jika sejak awal anak-anak dirangsang untuk aktif. Demikian pula untuk para guru, langkah-langkah awal di dalam proses pengajaran ini merupakan suatu masa penting untuk orientasi dan latihan dalam situasi “where they talk the language into the learners.” Hal ini meliputi semua ritual dan rutinitas yang akrab dengan anak-anak dari mata pelajaran lainnya.

Di samping itu, bisa juga disebutkan semua kata yang mungkin, seperti angka, warna, binatang, organ-organ tubuh dan lain-lainnya di dalam cerita, sajak dan lagu-lagu, bila situasinya memungkinkan dan nyaman.

Pada langkah awal ini juga hubungan antar tema dalam “thematic webbing” dengan latihan yang terklasifikasi merupakan sesuatu yang penting. Yang dilatihkan misalnya kata-kata “fruit, apples, oranges, grapefruit”. Buah-buahan muncul juga dalam tema tersendiri dengan konteks dan topik lain. Jika sebelumnya sudah dibicarakan mengenai warna, maka bisa diulangi lagi ketika membicarakan tentang buah-buahan.

Tujuan dari “first steps” bukan hanya sekadar mengumpulkan kata-kata tetapi untuk mengaktifkan pengetahuan awal anak-anak dan latihan pelafalan bahasa Inggris atau “tongues training” yang bersifat mendasar melalui situasi yang komunikatif dan dalam suasana bermain.

Terdapat berbagai macam kemungkinan untuk mempergunakan kosakata tersebut sesuai dengan situasi dan dalam permainan. Di samping itu, anak juga diharapkan mengerti dan mampu mengikuti perintah-perintah dasar sederhana dalam bahasa Inggris. Jika dalam minggu-minggu pertama diperoleh kurang lebih 400-600 istilah dalam bahasa Inggris, maka hal ini merupakan modal bagi anak untuk dapat berbicara sendiri secara sintaksis:

Reaksi awal anak terhadap contoh pengucapan adalah dengan mengucapkannya secara bersama-sama, di beberapa bagian, pada saat “lip reading”, guru hanya menggerakkan bibir untuk memberi contoh ucapan. Jika guru membisikkan sebuah pernyataan, maka anak mengerti bahwa mereka harus mengatakan dengan benar apa yang mereka dengar. Jika huruf-huruf pertama untuk kata-kata telah ditulis di papan tulis atau di kartu, maka anak mengucapkan kata yang inisialnya ditunjuk.
